Angmar is a playable faction available only in The Rise of the Witch-king. They are playable in all standard game modes as well as The Rise of the Witch-King's Angmar Campaign. This faction represents the ancient kingdom of Angmar, founded by the Witch-King. It's existence, and eventual destruction, predates the War of the Ring by over 1000 years.

This faction has great advantages regarding cavalry, and their in-game flexibility.

The dark nation of Angmar, located in the far north of Middle-earth, is a frozen wasteland where only the hardiest can survive. Its inhabitants include a nasty breed of Snow Trolls, monstrous Dire Wolves and a shadowy band of Men known only as the Black Númenoreans. These dark, frozen lands to the north can provide a wealth of resources for you to get started on your quest to control Middle-earth and return The Witch-king to his former glory.

Heroes[]

  • Hwaldar, the traitor of Rhudaur: Hwaldar is a Rhudaur hillchief secretly in league with The Witch-king.
  • Morgomir, the lieutenant of Carn Dum: One of The Nine and Lieutenant of Carn Dûm, this Black Rider is The Witch-king’s right hand and rules over the corrupted Men of Angmar with an iron fist.
  • Karsh, the Whispering Wraith of Angmar: Once a celebrated Captain of Arnor, Karsh is now a Wraith whose victims hear only the slightest whisper before they join him in his fate.
  • Rogash, the mighty troll of the north: A Troll of exceptional cunning and cruelty, Rogash destroys The Witch-King’s enemies with unparalleled might.
  • The Witch-king. the ruler of Angmar - The Witch-king strides onto the battlefield in full regalia, wielding his Morgul Blade and a mighty iron sceptre signifying his rule of Angmar.
  • Sauron, the Dark Lord: When summoned, Sauron dominates the battlefield with devastating attacks and powerful abilities.
  • Create a Hero: Angmar players may choose to bring a player created hero that is either a Corrupted Man, Olog-Hai, Servant of Sauron, or Wizard.

  • Builder: The orc Builder can construct a variety of structures.

Swordsmen[]

  • Thrall Master: A Black Númenorean emissary, the Thrall Master can summon and command a horde of Orcs or Hillman thralls in the service of The Witch-king.
  • Wildmen of Dunland: These corrupted warriors were recruited by Saruman to scourge the land of Rohan.
  • Thrall Master with Gundabad Warriors: These warriors are the backbone of The Witch-king’s army.
  • Black Númenoreans: These corrupted men are clad in splinted armour, wear fearsome iron masks and wield giant two-handed swords.

Pikemen[]

  • Thrall Master with Rhudaur Spearmen: These wild men of the north wield spears to take down enemy cavalry.
  • Hill Trolls: Hill Trolls wield long hammers which they use to unhorse and bludgeon enemy riders.

Archers[]

  • Thrall Master with Rhudaur Axe Throwers: Brothers to the Rhudaur Spearmen, the Axethrowers hurl large throwing axes to inflict damage on their enemies.
  • Dark Rangers: The Dark Rangers of Angmar wear the iron masks of the Black Númenoreans and wield deadly longbows.

Cavalry[]

  • Thrall Master with Gundabad Wolf Riders: These Gundabad Orcs ride wolves instead of Wargs.
  • Snow Trolls: Snow Trolls are native to the frozen northern wastelands taken over by Angmar. They are not as big as their southern relatives, but they are faster and smarter.

Monsters[]

  • Dire Wolves: These abnormally large members of the species are both fast and fearsome.

Siege Equipment[]

  • Troll Stone Throwers: Although simpler to construct than a Trebuchet, this siege engine has a similar range and power thanks to the awesome might of its Troll crew.

Support[]

  • Sorcerers: The Sorcerer’s primary attack is to cast powerful spells. He travels with a band of eight Acolytes. When he casts a spell, it consumes the souls of one or more of the Acolytes. Acolytes regenerate over time.

Ships[]

  • Umbar Transport: This defenceless transport can convoy units across large bodies of water.
  • Mordor Doom Ship: This suicide ship can be activated to cause a devastating explosion.
  • Corsair Black Ship: This ship fires heavy arrows for maximum effectiveness against enemy infantry and ships
  • Corsair Bombardment Ship: Equipped with a long range catapult, this ship is perfectly suited for destroying enemy structures.

Buildings[]

  • Mill: The Mill generates a continuous amount of resources which you can spend to expand your army and base. Your Command Point limit increases by 50 with each Mill.
  • Hall of the King's Men: The building from which Thrall Masters, Black Númenorians and Dark Rangers emerge.
  • Troll and Wolf Den: The Den produces Dire Wolves, Snow Trolls and Hill Trolls.
  • Temple of Twilight: The Temple of Twilight Building is where Sorcerers and their upgrades are created.
  • Dark Iron Forge: The Dark Iron Forge provides Angmar unit upgrades.
  • Battle Tower: The Battle Tower automatically fires arrows at nearby enemies and can be garrisoned with archers for greater damage.
  • Wall Hub: Wall Hubs allow the forces of Angmar to expand their castle walls.
  • Fortress: The mighty Fortress of Angmar carves a dark iron shape from the stark and frozen horizon. They are ornate and heavily decorated, but with concessions to the winter conditions.

  • Wall Hub: Wall Hubs allow the forces of Angmar to expand their castle walls.
  • Dire Wolf Kennel: The Dire Wolf Kennel releases Dire Wolves when enemy units approach.
  • Battle Tower: The Battle Tower automatically fires arrows at incoming enemies and can be upgraded with Ice Arrows.
  • Troll Sling Tower: The Troll Sling Tower hurls ice balls at incoming enemies.

Unit Upgrades[]

  • Soul Freeze: Allows Sorcerers to specialise in the Soul Freeze power.
  • Banner Carriers: The Banner Carrier displays the veterancy of your units and grants all troops in the horde healing bonuses.
  • Dark Iron Blades: The smiths of the North can deliver these weapons, blessed by darkness, to eager soldiers in the field.
  • Ice Arrows: Ice Arrows greatly increase the damage dealt to structures and enemy units.
  • Well of Souls: Allows Sorcerers to specialise in the Well of Souls power.
  • Corpse Rain: Allows Sorcerers to specialise in the Corpse Rain power.
  • Dark Iron Heavy Mail: Clad in Heavy Mail, the hordes of the North become as sturdy as the walls of their Fortresses.
  • Heavy Spiked Collars: Angmar's tamed Dire Wolves, when harnessed with sturdy Spiked Collars, are a much tougher threat on the battlefield.
  • Ice Shot: When equipped with Ice Shot, the Stone-Throwers of Angmar hurl freezing boulders at nearby enemies.

  • Wall Hub: Wall Hubs allow the forces of Angmar to continue expanding their castle walls.
  • Battle Tower: The Battle Tower automatically fires arrows at incoming enemies.
  • Postern Gate: The Postern Gate is a stealthed gate that only allows friendly units to pass through.
  • Gate: This primary defensive gate can be opened and closed for strategic deployment.
  • Wall Stone Thrower: This wall-embedded, Troll-operated stone thrower hurls heavy rocks at incoming enemies.

Tier 1 Powers[]

  • Blight: Reduce your enemies’ production within a certain area for a period of time.
  • Fell Wind: Powerful winds sweep your enemies off their feet and deposit them in a central location.
  • War Chant: Targeted troops gain a boost to their armour and damage output.

Tier 2 Powers[]

  • Untamed Allegiance: Allows the player to take control of target lair and recruit the associated unit.
  • Frozen Land: Improve your units’ effectiveness by making your enemies fight on your terms.
  • Summon Orcs: Bring forth multiple hordes of bloodthirsty Orcs to the battlefield.
  • Snow Bind: This freezing spell halts your enemies’ building and production within a certain area for a period of time. While frozen, these structures are immune to damage.

Tier 3 Powers[]

  • Summon Giants: Summon a pair of Mountain Giants to smash your foes.
  • Freezing Rain: Foil your enemies’ leadership abilities with this foul weather.
  • Summon Wights: Summon a group of deadly wights to do your bidding.

Tier 4 Powers[]

  • Avalanche: A torrent of snow and ice falls upon your enemies.
  • Summon Shade of the Wolf: Summon an immense spectral werewolf to the battlefield for great and terrifying effect.

Notes and Trivia[]

  • Angmar is the only faction in the series not to be directly based on the Lord of the Rings film trilogy. As such, its units, powers, and aesthetic are strikingly different to the other six factions in the game.
